Vincent has been training with us since last 2018, has competed at Grappling Industries to receive double silver in gi and no-gi and always has a friendly ‘hello, hello’ for everyone! Curiosity, and then got my ass kicked by a lighter female (and I loved it).

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Born in Berlin, then lived in Thessaloniki, Brussels, Lausanne, Malmö before arriving in Melbourne. I had some insecurities as a teenager, which translated into aggressivity. Got attacked a couple times and wanted to learn how to fight properly. Went to the army and did boxing for two years. Then tried grappling with a certain confidence and got humbled, which got me hooked since then!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Any hard workers and achievers with bad initial circumstances, who flipped their lives around! Makes me appreciate what I have, feeling grateful and eager for more! Lately, I’m looking into David Goggins’ accomplishments.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Many will hate me for this but I see food as a source of energy. Anything whole food plant based will do.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Get another partner! Just kidding, I’d say: “Leave your ego at the door and reduce your f**king intensity bro!”

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: HANNAH GORMAN

This member spotlight turns to Hannah Gorman, member of the year for 2018, an awesome asset to our gym, and massive support for the female team. This high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt can be found taking amazing photos of the crew and we have her to thank for many of our profile pictures. Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

I’d always been a sporty person, and in late 2010, when I started watching Elite XC I instantly knew I wanted to start MMA. When I contacted my local gym to sign up, the coach there asked me if I had any ground fighting experience. I told him I didn’t, and I made it pretty clear that I wasn’t interested, but he insisted I tried a Jiu-Jitsu class. I reluctantly showed up to a class, where we were learning how to break closed guard. I got hooked right away and remember how sore my body was for days afterwards! Haha. I trained MMA alongside Jiu-Jitsu for a few months, but I kept getting small injuries from MMA and would miss a couple of weeks of training. It was when I realised I missed Jiu-Jitsu more than the MMA that I ditched the MMA and trained solely in Jiu Jitsu.

What are your immediate training goals?

I’m not an avid competitor, but I should push myself to compete more this year. I also have Lachie’s half guard DVD and Craig’s leg lock DVD to work through!

What are your goals for the next five years?

I need to maintain a regular stretching and strength program to keep my back and hips strong for training. I don’t recover as fast as I used to. I’m also patiently waiting for something magical to happen to my Jiu Jitsu over the next few years as my next belt is the black coloured one.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I think anytime you share an obsession with a heap of people, they become like a second family. The added benefit to Absolute MMA is the world-class coaching team; not every gym has such a high level of instruction and/or world champions to call train with and learn from. It’s also the only gym I’ve trained at that has a constantly expanding group of ladies on the mat which is a testament to the inclusive nature at all 3 of the gyms. The Jits’n’tits girls in St Kilda were super welcoming to me, and they’ve become the best friends I could have asked for.

What is your favourite move?

Sweeps from deep half guard. I’m also partial to a leg lock.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I listen to everything from 90’s garage to chill-hop. I endure whatever trash is played during training!

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I like to take photos at training and to make mini-movies. I also like skating and surfing.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I moved to Melbourne from Devon in the UK, after always wanting to move to Australia. My parents used to live in Queensland and I used to holiday there lots as a kid.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to Lachie and Liv, as not only are they world-class athletes and coaches, but they take the time to help everyone learn, regardless of their ability. They show us techniques, and then go out and win world championship medals using the same techniques they’ve taught us. What more could you ask for?! I also really look up to the guys and girls at the St Kilda gym. A mix of totally different people who all get along super well and encourage each other to be the best they can be. It’s a great atmosphere!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I love eating at Sister of Soul in St Kilda. I recommend the nasi goreng and the polenta jenga. And the massaman curry. Ooo, and the udon noodles. All of it. I recommend all of it.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Not to compare my abilities to others, to enjoy each stripe at each belt and to not avoid training my weak areas.

Continue to be better than Darren and Fei combined.. oh wait, you said goals, not what I will be doing.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Lots of funny characters, but when it comes down to it everyone’s a beast, so you can have a good time, but also know you’re getting quality training.

What is your favourite move?

Drink some beers!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People that come from humble beginnings but then end up hugely successful or make big contributions to their society/community. Why? Because no one expected anything from them!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Can’t say I have a favourite place, as there is so much to choose from in Melbourne. I had a big fine dining phase, so I’m going to have to say Minamishima or Vue De Monde!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Andre listen to me closely, over the next five years you’re going to have maybe 2 instances where you have a legitimate chance to take Jeremy down and maybe 1 instance where you will be able to submit Jeremy with an arm bar. When those moments come focus, concentrate, empty your mind and let your subconscious mind take over so that you can…get reversed and cry.

How did you get into the sport?

I use to live next to the gym Claire and Tao were at before Absolute. I kept walking past and eventually summoned up the courage to go in. To be honest, I had no idea what Muay Thai was 😅 But I was hooked from the first day (Thanks to Claire!♥️).

What are your immediate training goals?

To sweep all the boys.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Training wise – I just want to keep turning up. I’ll be well in my 40’s in 5 years so I’ll be happy if I can still hold my own with the young ones! Life wise – I want to live in Berlin for at least a year, write a book and climb Mt Kilimanjaro.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

It’s my home. Well, other than Revs (which also has a cage in it), I’ve met some of my closest friends here. Sure, there’s ups and downs but we go through the sh*t together. And really, if you can’t punch your friends in the face what’s the point? Haha.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

“Baddest Bitch in the Room!” By Norma Jean Bell feat Moodymann 😍 It’s a disco, funk track.

What do you like to do to relax beside training?

I love music. I love dancing and I love being creative. So, I’m at a lot of gigs, Revs, and doofs in the summer! I also love baths. I have at least 2 per week.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I had a pretty shitty life until I was 29. Mainly due to drugs and alcohol. I won’t go into that but in 2010 I reached my rock bottom. It was life or death. And like one of my favourite movies quotes… I chose LIFE. I haven’t had a drink or a drug for over 8 years. I can honestly say, my life has changed in ways I didn’t think possible. It certainly wasn’t easy but f**k, those hard early days were worth it. I’m by no means ashamed of my past and love to share my experience whenever possible. You never know who might need to hear it ♥️ Whatever your demons are, you CAN come out on top. There’s always hope, ya know?

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people who are unapologetically themselves. Even if they annoy me, I respect the realness. I look up to women in general, but strong, powerful women who fight for what they believe in. I look up to people who work hard and smash their goals, whether its in sport or in real life. I look up to creative people. The dreamers. 😍

But mainly I look up to tall people like Joe, Oliver, Claire, Jess, Kylie, Hector ok…everyone is taller.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

The Grand in Richmond has the best gnocchi in the world. And Colonel Tan’s (Revs 😆) does some pretty amazing Thai with the added bonus of excellent music 👌🏾

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Write L and R on your gloves, pivot when you kick and stretch!!!!!!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT – KYLE RODDA

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Kyle Rodda, Financial Market Analyst and regular in our Melbourne CBD Boxing classes. Kyle is the guy that everyone goes to and says “Didn’t I see you on the television yesterday?” and if you keep your eyes peeled, you will indeed catch him on the big screen giving us all the financial news! Super humble and friendly, Kyle is known for consistently working hard in class, rain or shine, and we’re super happy to have him in the gym. Read on to find out more about Kyle!

Martial Arts/Sports: Boxing

How did you get into the sport?

I’d gotten back into playing football, but quickly realized I had no interest in it anymore. I wanted to find something that I could feel passionate about while keeping fit. I Googled boxing gyms in the CBD, found Absolute MMA, and totally found what I was looking for.

What are your immediate training goals?

To learn how to throw a hook properly. 18 months in and I am still working that one out.

What are your goals for the next five years?

By that stage, I’ll hopefully have learned how to throw a hook. If so, perhaps getting into the ring once to experience what competition is all about – that would be a big achievement for me.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

It all starts with the people. Everything else is secondary and evolves from that. The place has such a great culture. I’ve become a fitter and happier person since beginning my training. More importantly, though, I think I have become a better person for all the lessons I’ve learned from all the people I have met.

What is your favorite move?

That awkward thing that happens when one person goes for the fist-pound and the other person goes for the handshake. With my fighting ability, that’s about as graceful and lethal as I get.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

I love my music, so this is tough. I probably don’t listen to enough of the kind of music that would make for a good work-out/walk-out song. My first thought would be Rage Against The Machine – heavy, energetic, and gets you nice and p*ssed-off about the world. A good state of mind to be in before you gear-up to Box.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

“Kyl-o” is as probably as good as I have gotten since being at Absolute. Not too fearsome, unfortunately. Any nicknames I’ve had tend to a derivative of my last name. Simply Rodda is an easy one – Kyle always feels like a pain to say.

What do you like to do to relax beside training?

Playing guitar, outside of boxing, has always been the way I have unwound and centered myself. Otherwise, I have a 6 and 8-year-old brother and sister. I try to spend as much time with them as I can.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

It’s one of the beautiful quirks of training at Absolute MMA in the city: I am Melbourne born and raised, and with the people that I have met, that seems to be a novelty! There are so many different people who train at the gym from so many different backgrounds.

My piece of personal trivia tends to always be that I was expelled from two high schools. That was probably one of the defining features of my upbringing. Otherwise, I think I am just another middle-class, white-break kid from Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs, I’m afraid!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

The people I admire most are those with intelligence, self-awareness and strong ethics. I really enjoy being around people with a truly unique perspective on the world – something different from my own. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few of these types at Absolute MMA.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

There was a time where I loved dining out. But I went vegan, and your options tend to be narrowed quite a lot if you do that.

So two answers in light of that: Minamishima in Richmond was awesome – the sashimi degustation there was a blast; in terms of vegan eats, Neko Neko is a vegan-Japanese ramen place that I really enjoy.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Go make friends with the raucous crowd training in the corner – they are good people.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: SARAH SINCLAIR

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Sarah Sinclair, three stripe white belt and one of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ladies! Sarah can be found powering through two to three classes a day and is progressing rapidly in BJJ after making the move from Karate. She loves a good giggle, is a meme master and is always making us laugh in and out of the gym! Read on to find out more about Sarah.

Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

I’ve always wanted to train in BJJ, however cross training was discouraged in my Karate Club. After I graded to 2nd Dan, I decided to take a break and reached out to a friend who trained at Absolute. Best decision I’ve ever made 🙂

What are your immediate training goals?

Currently strengthening and rehabilitation of my knee, so that I can roll more confidently and fully trust my movement. Competing is also on the horizon this year for me, so I’m aiming to ramp up the training and get better at take downs.

What are your goals for the next five years?

In the next 5 years, I’d like to have more experience with competing, possibly even have the opportunity to do some training and comps overseas. Movement is also something I’m committed to improving with respect to training.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The people are amazing here, and the calibre and range of experience across the coaches and other students means that I will always have the opportunity to improve. The culture and support here is fantastic.

What is your favourite move?

I’m really liking the weave pass at the moment, and also the bow and arrow.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I like a lot of random stuff – I’d say that the majority of my collection is a combination of alternative, metal, progressive trance and deep house. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Lane 8.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

The first nickname I got at Absolute was “Sezzy-Lee” haha, I’ve recently also acquired “Jandals”.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I’m probably the most relaxed after a swim, but I usually wind down on the couch watching something on Netflix 🙂

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in a rural town on the Bellarine Peninsula called Portarlington and moved out when I was 19. Since then, I’ve kind of bounced around Melbourne and finally settled in St Kilda 🙂 Also one of the best decisions I’ve made 🙂

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I’d say the people I train with, especially the people who have the time and patience to coach me during a roll 🙂 you know who you are.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Oh my god, there are so many!! I really enjoy ramen – and there’s an awesome ramen bar in China Town called Fukuryu Ramen. If you upload a pic of yourself with the ramen on Insta, you get free green tea ice cream!!! Also, if you’re ever down Geelong way, Fujisan on Ryrie Street have a decent ramen as well 🙂

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’d probably tell myself to relax (something that I’m still needing to remember now and then). Also to listen to my body and not ignore the niggly little injuries.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KIM COUSINS

This member spotlight turns to Kim Cousins, brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, active competitor on the BJJ scene and super mum to not one, not two but three teenagers! Kim has competed at the Asian Open, the Pan Pacifics, Masters World Championships, AJJC (The Australian Jiu-Jitsu Championship), IBJJF Sydney Open and many more competitions. How did you get into the sport?

My ex husband did BJJ back in the 90s. When we split up, I was looking for an exercise outlet to get me out of my garage and squat rack, and get me meeting some new people. Bjj seemed like the obvious choice.

What are your immediate training goals?

To land a clean take-down 😉

What are your goals for the next five years?

To keep improving, and work on the weaker sides of my game. Lately I’ve been working on wrestling and am enjoying working on my stand up and No-Gi game.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The people and the skill level. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be able to train in three world class facilities, all bringing their own uniqueness to my training.

What is your favourite move?

Bow and arrow.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I have very eclectic music taste. My playlists include anything from Madonna to Black Sabbath to Depeche Mode. I do love some bad 80s dance though, much to my kids’ disgust.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I’m sadly still yet to receive a Portuguese nickname 😉

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love bikram yoga. While sweating in a 40 degree room for 90 minutes isn’t everyone’s idea of relaxing, I love it!

Who am I kidding? Food and alcohol (as in photo above) is how I really like to relax.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m born and bred in Melbourne and love it too much to move. I come from a strong swimming family; my grandfather went to the Commonwealth Games and I grew up getting up at 4.30am to train before school. Now my kids are a bit older I’m planning to hit up the early morning classes in the New Year. I’m definitely a morning person!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I look after my kids full time and don’t get out much, so anytime that someone wants cook a meal for me, I’m hugely appreciative. (I’m happy to take any offers😉)

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t be so hard on yourself (I still struggle with that one!).

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Bek Dimase, aspiring Muay Thai fighter who is looking to make her debut in 2019! Bek has shed an inspiring amount of 8kgs this year, and we couldn’t be prouder of all that she’s achieved in terms of her fitness and martial arts technique. How did you get into the sport?

I’ve always had a fascination with fighting and followed a lot of different promotions/fighters. Always curious but too nervous to try, it wasn’t until I met my partner (who coincidentally is a kick boxer) and his continuous encouragement (nagging) that got me over the line to give it a go. Haven’t looked back since my first class!

What are your immediate training goals?

Immediate training goals are to lose the last 5 kilos to fight weight, get up my sparring and land that beautiful question mark head kick… and of course have my first fight!

What are your goals for the next five years?

The next 5 years is a big one… I’m just focused on getting to my first fight, haha! I just want to keep pushing and see where I end up. And travelling, I intend to do lots of that!

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I love the people more than anything. The coaches and other members have made the gym feel like a second home to me. I’ve always been able to be myself, have fun, challenge myself, and am kept accountable… I’ve never experienced that at any other gym.

What is your favourite move?

I love a good question mark kick and the oh so sweet feeling when it lands, haha.

The only consistent ones are “the boss” or Toohey likes to call me “Bekka the Wrecka”.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love a good beach session or just being outside generally. I find sunshine and nature helps me reconnect to myself and disconnect from the hustle and bustle that life and work can sometimes bring.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

My favourite childhood memory is going to my Nonna & Nonno’s place at the end of every summer on National Wog Day (it’s real!) and making pasta sauce from my nonno’s home grown tomatoes. My job was to pop the basil in the bottles and I remember my nonno would inspect them! It’s a tradition that we still do every year and means so much to me…. nonno still inspects my basil placement… it’s a tough gig!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

For me, those that are honest, kind, courageous and show integrity are the people that I look up to the most, as these are attributes I aspire to grow within myself. Over the last year, I’ve really looked up to my parents, siblings and partner more and more. Through a really tough year, they’ve demonstrated all of the above and that has really inspired and helped me be a better person.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Um, if I had to pick it’d be the club sandwich from Smith & Deli, or just the whole menu at Smith & Daughters next door.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’d probably tell myself four things
1. It’s okay to be uncomfortable, it’s not okay to give up.
2. You don’t have to get it right the first time
3. Learn to love the journey, it’s a bloody long one!
4. KEEP YOUR GUARD UP WHATEVER YOU DO!!

Nick is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and regularly supports our competition team in their training. He’s known for his long limbs, sneaky triangles and an extreme love of his dog, Trey. How did you get into the sport?

My best mate was going to PUMMA on the Gold Coast to try out a MMA class, he called me on his way and said do you want to tag along… That was 6 years ago.

What are your immediate training goals?

Help the team get ready for any competitions they have, stay in shape in case I decide to return to competing.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Teach more yoga, get a new color belt possibly, get another dog.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Grew up on the Gold Coast and spent 25 years there. Clare got a job in Melbourne so being the epic boyfriend I am, we moved. While I was training at PUMMA I was told by multiple team mates to come train at Absolute when I moved. I got a job across the road, walked in, paid my fees and have been here ever since.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Few special mentions Aaron S., Thiago S., Dustin B. & Jebba, they’ve been a significant part of my journey to now, but it’s important to keep an open mind because you can learn from anyone.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Turn up on time, listen to your coach, drink more water, eat all the calories, have fun, don’t quit, it is what it is as it is, namaste.

Known for her extreme work ethic and boundless energy, Juliette is a competition class regular at Melbourne CBD and always has a smile for everyone! Read on to find out more about Juliette!

Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

When I was living in London, I decided to take martial art classes again as a hobby and ended up joining a Checkmat gym down the road. I was pretty confused by the techniques and the rules at first. My coach was very supportive and sent me to a woman only seminar in an affiliated gym. I got twisted like a puppet and submitted more times than one can count by a skinny 11 year old yellow belt. I’ve been pretty obsessed with the sport ever since.

What are your immediate training goals?

Attending classes as much as I can balance with work, whilst trying to get quality training in instead of over training. I aim to make my opponent feel like I’m twice as heavy as I am.

What are your goals for the next five years?

To sharpen my Jiu-Jitsu, enter more tournaments and stay reasonably uninjured. Trying to not make my ears look like I’m an east European wrestler. Whenever I get PR, I’d also like to go back to uni and study sport nutrition.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The thing I love the most is the people. Everyone is always very welcoming, respectful and available to help each other. There’s no ego around. Also having classes all day makes things very convenient for shift workers.

What is your favorite move?

Although I’ve recently started trying to grab more legs, I love chokes. I love them all.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Whilst training I love listening to the kind of rock music I grew up with, like the Offspring or Sum 41. I’m also playing Chvrches on repeat at the minute. On competition day I tend to listen to Britney Spears or similar cheap commercial pop, cause it cheers me up. Stop judging.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I like to cycle, or go read a book outdoors and try new hipster cafes. I can often be found walking around in Ikea for no reason. I’m also on a quest to visit all the rooftop bars Melbourne has to offer. Wish me luck.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in the suburb of Paris and moved to London for work when I graduated. I lived there for 4 years and loved the city, but I was feeling the impact of the lack of sunlight. In June 2016, it rained for 25 days in a row, so I decided enough was enough, and drunkenly bought a working holiday visa and a flight to Australia. And here I am!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Anyone who is kind, humble and respects others in their differences really.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I don’t have a favorite place to eat, I just love South East Asian food in general. But let’s face it, nothing’s better than a good cheese platter.

I know she regularly pulls double shifts as a chef then comes to the gym and rolls like a beast in the 10am competition session, does a lunchtime class AND trains again in the evening.
