Do you want to learn the most exciting sport in the world, Mixed Martial Arts? Our Four Week Beginner’s Program at Absolute MMA is the perfect introduction to MMA!
This program entitles you to attend up to three “Fundamentals” or “Introduction” MMA classes each week at Absolute MMA Melbourne CBD, Collingwood or South Yarra. You are welcome to train at multiple locations if you wish.
Over your first four weeks of training you’ll be learning the fundamentals of MMA, including grappling, striking and takedowns — everything you need to build a solid, well-rounded foundation in MMA.
With world-class coaches and veteran fighters guiding you from the moment you first step on the mat, you can rest assured knowing that you’re in experienced hands.
You won’t just benefit from learning cage and ring-tested techniques however, you’ll also be getting in the best shape of your life as you build the strength and conditioning that MMA has become famous for.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- The fundamentals of striking, including punches, elbows, knees and kicks.
- How to control your opponent with positions such as the clinch, guard, side control, mount and more.
- Learn to end the fight with chokes, arm locks and leg lock submissions.
- Protect yourself properly with combat-tested defense.
- Take your opponent down from range or in the clinch.
- Learn all the essential warm-ups and basic movements of MMA.
- Pick up valuable skills that are effective both for self-defense and competition.
A Mixed Martial Arts class generally starts some sport-specific warm-up movements like shoulder rolls, wrestling steps, pummeling and more. You will often do a round or two of shadow boxing before moving on to the technical portion of the class.
Your coach will then develop your skills with any number of training exercises including drills, specific training, pad work and more. The content of the class will vary from week to week, keeping the class fresh and focusing on all aspects of MMA.
In Advanced classes, you will often have the opportunity to apply what you have learned with light sparring. The objective with sparring is to test your skills, to attempt to apply what you have learned in the class and to have some fun – it is not to hurt each other. All sparring sessions are closely monitored and we promote a safe and positive learning environment.

Luke Catubig has been training martial arts since the age of 11 and competing in MMA since 2005. He holds an MMA record of 11 wins with 6 losses and has fought in Australian Fighting Championships and Hex Fighting Championships, two of the largest MMA organisations in Australia, as well as URCC in the Philippines.
In 2014, Luke scored the fastest knockout in Australian Fighting Championships history, stopping his opponent in 10 seconds.
Raphael Berthet is a professional mixed martial artist and Pankration fighter with a record of 9 wins and 2 losses. He holds victories on some of the biggest MMA events in Australia, including Hex Fight Series and Valor.
During his 15 years spent training martial arts, he has won the French National Pankration Championship (a modified form of MMA in France) and has won multiple judo state titles in his native France.
Maryanne Mullahy is a three-time World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a two-time World Championship Silver Medallist and before receiving her Black Belt she was currently ranked as the #1 Brown Belt female in the world for no-gi jiu-jitsu.
A truly well-rounded martial artist, she has trained and fought Muay Thai in Thailand, has experience in professional MMA, and she has won silver at the Australian Cup in wrestling.
She has recently completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Human Physiology.
Sean Le Gourrierec is a professional mixed martial artist with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. He has been training and competing since 2009.
He is also an accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who has trained and competed in Brazil. He currently holds a brown belt and has won Pan-Pacific and Victorian Championships.

Q: Do I need any experience to join this program?
A: This program assumes no prior training whatsoever. From your first step onto the training mats, we’ll walk you through all of the fundamental techniques, drills and concepts.
Q: When can I start training?
A: You can start now! There is no set start date for the program. We rotate through a syllabus, allowing you to start at any time. You’ll definitely want to start sooner rather than later though as there are limited spots available.
Q: Do I need to be fit to start?
A: No, you don’t need to be fit to start. In fact, in the beginning we expect most people to have trouble keeping up! MMA is a physically demanding sport! Over the first couple of weeks though your body will adapt to the training and you’ll quickly feel yourself becoming fitter and stronger. If you have health or injury concerns, please consult your doctor.
Q: Can I join this program by myself? Do I need a training partner?
A: You’ll find lots of friendly training partners in the gym! The social atmosphere of the gym is one of the best aspects of training so you can be sure that you’ll meet lots of new friends as well as training partners. Of course, you can join with a friend if you like, but it’s not required.
Q: Do I have to spar/is there contact?
A: MMA is a contact sport and sparring is an important part of training but you won’t be exposed to it until you’re ready. In the beginning you’ll be doing drills and then later, start doing controlled, situation specific training. Once you have a good amount of experience under your belt, you can start to do sparring. We want to keep things safe for you and your training partners.
Q: Do I need any equipment?
A: In terms of clothing, all you’ll need are shorts or tights and a t-shirt or rashie. With regards to protective equipment, all you’ll need is a mouth guard.
Q: Is this program available to both men and women?
A: Yes, men and women over the age of 16 are able to participate in this program.
